Electric Service and Upgrading

According to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), an electric service is the conductors and equipment for delivering electric energy from the serving utility to the wiring system of the premises served.

Residential services in New Jersey are delivered by the utility companies at a nominal voltage of 120/240. The size of the service is measured in amps with the most common sizes being 100, 150, and 200 amps.

Many older homes have even smaller services of only 60 amps. Today's electrical codes require a minimum of 100* amps for any new residential service installed.

Upgrading your service simply means increasing the size of all components to allow more amps to be available for your home's use.
* NEC 230.79(c) requires a minimum disconnecting means of 100 amps for single family dwellings.
